“Every time I return to Taroko, it always feels like coming home,” said George Sheu, a volunteer interpreter at Taroko National Park (TNP). Fifteen years ago, Sheu started to volunteer out of a need to occasionally get away from his heavy-loaded job in advertising.

In the realm of image recording, many have chosen a high-profile style of career, while this man has opted for a toilsome and quiet one. Over the 31 years as a photographer and filmmaker, he has produced 18 documentaries, 400 plus feature reports, over 200,000 images and text files of fieldwork on Taiwan's environment, and participated in the production of more than 200 program episodes of environmental issues.

Chosen as one of the 10 Preservation Ambassadors of YSNP, former president of Chinese Taipei Mountaineering Association Zhu-xian Weng grew up in Keelung and has been a good swimmer since little. He once served in the Navy in 1958, when the R.O.C. and the P.R.C. were still under arms. After retiring from the military, he worked in CSBC Corp. Taiwan, and has gradually cultivated a strong interest in the Nature.

A hand-drawn owl on the windshield of his compact car, a frank and hearty smile, and an unrestrained composure, these are the trademarks of Ching-yao Chiu,an active senior interpreter at Shei-Pa National Park (SPNP). Also known by his nickname “Big Bro Chiu,” he is reputed as “the philosopher in the forest.”

Though an aborigine in Taiwan, Jian-xiang Gao had moved to the city since he was 10. He never got the chance to know about the mountains and forests he once lived in, except for some childhood memories of the snow-capped peaks of Syue Mountain and the colorful blossoms of rhododendrons his grandfather taught him to identify. That’s when the beauty and mystery of mountains made an imprint on Gao’s mind.

Among the many scholars dedicated to bicological conservation in Taiwan, Prof. Ying Wang is an influential figure who was born in Hangzhou, grew up in a military dependents’ village in Songshan, Taipei, and has long been devoted to wildlife conservation across Taiwan.
