Protecting ocean with “Taijiang National Park Beach Cleanup Expansion 2017”

 

 

April 22 is Earth Day. Taijiang National Park Headquarters specifically launched the beach cleanup activity on the weekend before Earth Day. Nearly 100 volunteers from government agencies and national parks and the seventh squad of the Seventh Special Police Corps, National Police Administration joined the activity to contribute to ocean protection.

The activity took place at the beach under Siciao Bridge. Nearly 100 participants collected about 500kg of garbage, and plastic bottles were the most prevelant. Besides the fisheries waste specific to fish culture farms in Tainan, including 375 polystyrene products, oyster threads, and floats, there were also 274 pieces of fishing gears, cigarette butts, and lighters, and 787 pieces of glass bottles and plastic beverage cups.

The beach cleanup followed the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) procedures. After observing and recording the variety and quantity of garbage, Taijiang National Park Headquarters registered the data on the website to connect with the world. Reflection and discussion activities were also arranged for members to understand the impacts of marine waste on the overall ecosystem, the environment, and living organisms.
