The most beautiful work of man and nature: Truku Music Concert

Adhering to the intent to develop ecotourism and the local cultural industries, Taroko National Park Headquarters organizes the “Truku Music Concert” and “Truku Traditional Craft and Culture Exploration” activities every year.

So far, it is the eleventh session. In addition to being the important activities to inherit the legacy of indigenous cultures and experience, these activities have attracted travelers worldwide to listen to the wonderful music and experience craft beauty of Truku tribe.

Between April and December 2017, Truku people will give outdoor performances at the Taroko Visitor Center square (next to the tuck shop) on April 8, May 13, June 10, September 9, November 11, and December 9 for audiences to deeply experience the splendid music composed of indigenous culture and the four seasons.

Music has always been an important cultural asset of Truku people and the first impression about indigenous cultures. For example, music and dance are indispensable from indigenous festivities, marriages, religions, and everyday life. The elements of Truku music and dance are refined from the living experience between man and nature. Truku people make musical instruments are made with plants in the vicinity and improvise songs to accompany simple dances with these instruments to fully express themselves in festivities and ceremonies (e.g., the sowing ritual and the harvest ritual) and show respect for nature.

This year (2017), Taroko National Park Headquarters presents Truku songs and dances in the accompaniment of traditional musical instruments interpret spectacular works different ways of performing in the themes: “Heavenly Voice in the Valley”, “Traditional Life”, and “Chatting with Music” for audiences to feel the thankfulness human spirit inherited in Truku songs and dances.

The Truku Music Concert is ingeniously combined with Truku traditional arts and culture. Taroko National Park Headquarters will invite a host of knitting, leather and rattan weaving craft artists, such as Uma Leather Studio, Nadolan Studio, Mwaray Studio, and Masaw Rattan Weave Workshop, to give on-site instructions. Each piece of handiwork tells the reminiscence of tribal life and presents the transcendence of the force of life of the artist. Therefore, each piece is a true collectible.

All six concerts organized by Taroko National Park Headquarters in 2017 is admission free. Workshops will also be held from 13:20 to 15:20 for instructors to explain the design concepts behind each work and instruct citizens to experience the fund of DIY. Each workshop will accepts 30 citizens, with a labor and material fee at NT$150/person.
