In recent years, the population growth and economic development have pushed up the demands for natural resources in countries around the globe. I know that the national parks in Taiwan have abundant precious natural resources, but do they have equally rich mineral resources as well?

There are about 20 types of ores that are economically viable and can be further developed and utilized. In fact, some of the national parks do contain mineral deposits.

So what had Taiwan’s national parks done to preserve these mining sites?

Take the Walami area in Yushan National Park for example. There are marbles, dolomite, serpentine and cooper ores as well as abundant ecological resources in the area, so the government started to engage in negotiations with the local mining companies and eventually designated a no-mining zone there.

After these mining relics are preserved, will people have the opportunityto get closer to them?

The national parks will evaluate the situations of the mining relics and hold proper conservation activities. For example, in the Yonglai discontinuedmines near Lengshuikeng at Yangmingshan National Park, the park Headquarters has been offering an annual event titled Eco-Working Holiday as a unique experience of conservation work.

Wow, that sounds interesting. Can you tell me what kind of activity that is?

The participants plant aquatic plants around the ponds left from the old times, when mining was still carried out in the area. Also, they get rid of foreign species and turn the discontinued mines into an ecologically diversified homeland for the wild species there as well as an ecological education park for the general public.

I think the place is definitely worth a visit. By the way, what national parks in Taiwan have these special cloud forests?

The cloud forests in Taiwan are special in their own ways. For example, Guanwu, Shei-pa National Park is shrouded in mist and clouds all year-round, making it one of the best places to observe the holy ridgeline and the misty clouds; at Shihshan area of Yushan National Park, you can observe Alishan, the cloud sea, the sunset as well as many Formosan macaques. Oh and interestingly enough, you can see clouds on Yangminshan, but that’s because of the northeast wind, not the mountain’s altitude.

That is truly a good way of learning while having fun. It enables people to know about the past of the area, to be part of it now and to make it better in the future. I want to be part of it too!
