A Blue-winged Pitta, a protected rare summer visitor, shows its beautiful face again

Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park (高雄都會公園), managed by Marine National Park (海洋國家公園) Headquarters, is a former rubbish landfill site transformed into a green park space. The main objective of building the park was to give the people a place to exercise and relax. By large-scale greening it was also hoped the park would have both environmental protection and ecological functions.

Since the park opened, Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society (高雄鳥會) birdwatchers and park staff have recorded 135 types of bird there, with some very rare migratory birds, for example, the Gray Thrush (Turdus cardis烏灰鶇) and Black paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone atrocaudata (Eyton綬帶鳥), seen, a special achievement for the park. The park first recorded a sighting of the rare Blue-winged Pitta  (Pitta brachyura Temminck & Schlegel八色鳥) in 2007, a sighting that thrilled birdwatchers. On April 24, 2008, a second sighting was made in the park. (the Blue-winged Pitta is member of Family Pittidae (八色鳥科) of which there are 32 kinds in the world and only one in Taiwan. It is a rare summer visitor (夏候鳥) to Taiwan that is a protected by law. It is a beautiful bird which has eight colors. The fact that the park has been visited by the Blue-winged Pitta (Pitta brachyura Temminck & Schlegel) for two years in succession shows that the diverse forest environment in the park has made it one of the best places for bird watching in the Greater Kaohsiung area.
