A Different Kind of Listening—Gordon Hempton Shares Important Life Experiences on Listening to Silence in Taiwan

The various noises in our daily environment is rooted in many people’s regular life circles, causing severe sleeping issues and further impact to the normal rhythms of life. The real environmental issues are human greed and a narrow point of view. A calm mind might be able to see where the issue is and enable us to possess the inspiration and wisdom that are visionary and facilitate the solving of problems. For this reason, the Soundscape Association of Taiwan, Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters, Yu Ai Kuang Wellness Association R.O.C. and various other organizations co-invited renowned acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton to Taiwan to work together in promoting the practice of listening to the silence of the mountains and forests as respite from our noisy daily lives.

The National Taiwan Library held the public speaking event “Listening to Silence” in the evening of December 5 and the “Listening to Nature Workshop” at Yangmingshan National Park on December 7-8. Important foreign and Taiwanese campaign experiences were shared and consolidated at the workshop in hopes of helping Taiwanese society acquire a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the benefits of listening to nature.
