One Night in the Tribe — Taroko Mini-Trip Series

The Taroko National Park Headquarters (TNPH) has combined NGOs and community resources to create a 2 day and 1 night themed "Taroko Mini-Trip" environmental education event to help the public better understand cross-central-island villages and local tribal cultures. In 2018, the TNPH, the Tongli Village Natural Ecosystem Association, and the Hualien Xiulin Township Tourism Promotion Association organized 5 "Taroko Mini-Trips": 3 in Luoshao Community and 2 in Tongli community.

Tongli Community, located at the east entrance junction of the Taroko National Park, used aboriginal cuisine as its main theme and planned the wonderful tour "Dining in Taroko". During the day, the visitors are guided through famous tourist spots and trails in Taroko, such as Yanzikou (Swallow Grotto), Buluowan, and Dekalun Trail. At night they will stay in a hostel and sit next to local residents to enjoy a tasty organic meal including corn, arrowhead bamboo shoot, and mountain litsea.

After dinner, the participants may join the residents in song and dance under sky full of stars, with the traditional tribal music in the background, and release all the stress of living in the city. The next day after lunch, the organizer also arranged for traditional DIY activities in the Tongli community workshop, where participants are taught how to weave Taroko tribal cultural specialties to be taken home as souvenirs.

October is when the Taroko Festival of Gratitude is held. Tongli Community also welcomes all to come and join the festivities, including food preparation for various ceremonies and praying ceremonies to the ancestor spirits. The aboriginal culture and wisdom in their lives will definitely become a touching memory forever.

In 2018, the 2 day and 1 night Luoshao Community events are Hocaitao (March), Savors of Vinegar (July), and Mountain Forest Beauty (December).

During the day, the participants will visit the Central Cross-Island Highway Story Hall, Yanzikou, Changchun Shrine, and other sites along the Central Cross-Island Highway. Participants will stay at the Luoshao Lodge, known as the "Small White House", and listen to second generation road builders of the Central Cross-Island Highway speak about life in the mountains and why the community calls itself "Houcaitao". The second day will be a DIY handmade flute activity with a flute maker residing in the forest, and a meal of local cuisine.

The Taroko National Park Headquarters indicated that "Taroko Mini-Trip" received 18 - 22 people for each event. Many participants who have shared an intimate trip together still keep in touch through instant messages afterwards. Taroko National Park Headquarters welcome you to come stay one night in the mountain forest this year and experience a unique and in-depth journey into the local communities.
