2023 International Summit for Gray-Faced Buzzards Connects East Asia to Jointly Protect Habitats of Migratory Raptors

The 2023 International Summit for Gray-Faced Buzzards was initiated by the Asian Raptor Research and Conservation Network (ARRCN) and the Nature Conservation Society of Japan (NACS-J). This is the third time the event was organized, with Taiwan as the host nation. Representatives from the governments of Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and South Korea, as well as civil organizations and experts, were invited to Taiwan for exchange and sharing.

Deputy Director General Chen said that Taiwan is located along an important route of migratory raptors in East Asia, where the migration mainly occurring in spring and autumn. Hundreds of thousands of migratory raptors pass through Taiwan every year, where low mountain and foothill environments serve as a place for them to rest and feed. In October, the “eagle river” formed by migrating gray-faced buzzards passing through the Hengchun Peninsula becomes one of the most talked about ecological spectacles.

This summit allowed the international community to see the achievements of Taiwan’s public-private partnership in the conservation of the gray-faced buzzard and migratory raptors. We look forward to building more partnerships with other regions in Asia in the future to carry out global action in jointly safeguarding these precious and rare raptor resources.
